Thamesians 2XV 31 Ealing Exiles 0 - September 27th Print E-mail

Last season’s annus mirabilis included a tough brace of games against the Ealing Exiles for our heroic Twos. With the score set to one apiece, neophyte captain Simon Gale gave his Agincourt speech (something about walloping people early I recall) – one side was about to take the lead in our growing rivalry.

Under an uncompromising autumn sun, in constant conflict with a sideline coruscating with Twickenham’s Great and Good, the Twos were soon to force their noses in front. Following some muscular work from the pack, Grant Kunneke - novice at 9 and shaped like a 3 - soon had the ball in stand-off Choc Philp’s hands. A show to the left, some off-the-ball genius from quadragenarian JJ and Choc eased through a generous gap to place down between the sticks, followed by the first of three successful conversions from JJ’s dependable boot. It was a lead Twos weren’t to surrender.

Soon afterwards, a mix-up behind the Exiles pack allowed evergreen prop Tubby (Dave Osbourne) to add to the lead. The exact details of the touchdown remain in dispute; either a 40 yard fury of sidesteps and hand-offs, or a pick-up and flop over the line – no-one is quite sure. Either way the pack had their desserts.

Ultimately it was Twos backs who took the scoring and the game beyond Ealing. A couple for Glen Perry, either worthy of song, and debut try for Johnno Chandler on the end of a succession of loops and passes added further illumination to this brightest of days. In support of the flying three-quarters, special mention should go to James Roberts at the back – straight off the plane from Mexico and supporting a tan of David Dickinson proportions, he had one of his best days in the shirt.

In an effort to sure up the engine room and improve discipline in the face of a waxing Ealing scrum, Twos loosed big Adrian into the fray. 3 minutes and 1 slap later he was back on the sidelines and taking a good hard look at himself.

As the game drew to a close in a flurry of substitutions and cramp, Glen Perry, with a man outside, backed himself for a hat-trick and ran straight into the admirable Exiles 15.

Game over, I’m off!

Can someone translate that into words of 2 syllables or less so the forwards can understand it?
