Saturday proved to be a tough game for Thamesians against a younger and fitter Hammersmith side, although the result in no way represents the battle that took place on the pitch.
With uncontested scrums and not one fat bloke in sight on a young and fresh looking opposition, a Thamesians Winger missing in action (Young Alex), and a confused looking Baldy moved from pack to Wing to fill a gap, it was clear that this game was going to be anything but a walk in the park.
Down to 14 men Thamesians still managed to be dominant in the first half, with a try from Lance and conversion from Cookie. Then defending well with everyman putting body on the line to keep a persistent Hammersmith out of the 22. Strong runs and great passing from Billy created the few opportunities that T’s were unable to cash in on due to an equally determined opposition.
Yates, Gav, Brendan, Si and Baldy to name a few held a strong defensive line in the second half, with Zippy tackling anything that moved. Finally a second opportunity came as Grant released Zippy, who broke the defensive line and ran in T’s second try of the game.
Victory celebrations were short lived, as it wasn’t long before a more determined Hammersmith side with a fresh batch of subs started to make an impact. Injuries to Brendan and Yates, meant that Slash with was pulled off the sideline despite injury to join a tired team of 13 men. Hammersmith cashed in on their opportunity winning the game with a succession of running tries.
