2nd XV Rugby (Spartans)
Spartans 71 v 32 Hampstead 5XV – December 17th
Written by Paddy
Friday, 30 December 2011 11:21

The Spartans finished the year (not season Kev) with an 11 try win over Hampstead. The Spartans raced into an early 33-0 lead as they took advantage of some poor Hampstead defence. However the team decided that if the opposition wouldn’t tackle then neither would they, and 33-0 soon became 33-22. Rory completed an unlikely, but well deserved, hat-trick on the stroke of half time which gave the Spartans a bit more breathing space as they entered half time with a 40-22 lead.

Strong words were issued at half time regarding the defence, and the Spartans entered the second half with a determination to perform better than they had in last 20 or so minutes of the first half. While Hampstead managed to get a couple of early second half tries, the Spartans finally rediscovered how to tackle and closed out the game by scoring five unanswered tries.

The defence (or lack of) was the major talking point but the Spartans showed plenty of skill in the backline as well as power up front, and familiarity is starting to spread between the players. While there is still plenty to work on, the team has come on a long way and will be confident ahead of the big league matches in the New Year.

Tries: Rory (3), Paddy (2), Jonesy, Levi, Arlind, Jason (2), Mossy
Conversions: Ryan (8)
Man-of-the-Match: Rory

Spartans 0 v 17 London Irish 4XV - December 10th
Written by Kevin Newe

Well the winning run had to end sometime, but there was no disgrace with the manner of defeat against a strong and determined London Irish side. A hugely competitive game ebbed and flowed for the full 80 minutes, but in the end, the old truism about whoever scored first would have the ascendency proved correct.

The game remained scoreless for the best part of 65 minutes, with Spartans showing some spirited defence in the first quarter of the game to keep Irish out, including two try saving tackles on the line. If the first 20 minutes were about Irish’s attacking talent, the next 20 saw Spartans cut loose themselves with James Turner, Andy Jones and Ben Southerst all showing strong running skills to cut through the Irish defence. Unfortunately, a few handling errors and some difficulties with the Spartans lineout stalled momentum and meant that elusive first try remained out of reach at the break.

Both teams made changes at half time and it seemed that Irish came out of the blocks quicker, with the bit between their teeth. They soon started to turn the screw at scrum time and the Spartans pack came under immense pressure for the next 40 minutes. Despite some spirited defence, it was only a matter of time before the first score came and it did when Irish worked the ball wide and exploited a three-man overlap to put the first points on the board. Unfortunately, a few injury-led changes to the Spartans backline meant a reshuffle of personnel, which disrupted the momentum of the team and as a result a further two Irish tries followed to give the score line some gloss. At the final whistle, all agreed that the match was played in the right competitive spirit (despite some strong banter from the touchline… Dendy!) and that both teams left everything out on the field.

It was exactly the sort of fixture for Spartans to test how far we’ve come since September and while there are still some tweaks to be made, we’ve proved we can play and compete with the stronger teams in this region. Both teams agreed to a rematch next year, so we look forward to hosting London Irish on St. Patrick’s Day.

Spartans 79 v 17 Old Isleworthians - December 3rd
Written by Kevin Newe
Monday, 05 December 2011 14:39

It was a crisp wintery day as a combination Hamptonians and Thamesians team took to the rugby field against Old Isleworthians. An expectant crowd of boozed up old men were looking forward to the match and they were treated to some dazzling rugby as the Hamptons/Thamesians (Spartans) team tossed the ball around with insouciant glee. It was real old school rugby, from the ridiculously oversized archaic jerseys; through to the decision by both teams to often look for the tap and go and not forgetting the obligatory punch up in the second half that saw a player binned from each side. Thankfully, Mickey Wu decided not to use his kung fu skills on the Isleworthians player. He is literally a killing machine, having worked as an assassin for hire for the UK Government back in the 1970s. (Click read more below for full story)

CSSC Barbarians XV 24 v 26 Spartans - October 12th
Written by Gav Lock
Wednesday, 16 November 2011 15:11

Spartans away fixture was against CSSC Barbarians. After a quick bus trip to their Chiswick ground picking up a few players on the way it was always felt this was going to be a tricky away fixture. The Barbarians fielded a strong side with a big competitive pack, five minutes in we new we were against it after conceding the first try. Re- grouping quickly we all understood it was all about quick ball and setting the backs free. This worked, the ball was won by the forwards, Sam passed it back and the ball went through the hands with Ryan scoring the first of our four tries. The game became more physical with the Barbarians wanting more of a forward confrontation, Rory a new member the club was having none of it meeting force with force. Soon a second try was scored by Ahmed dragging two men over with him.

Starting in the second half we scored another 2 tries in the backs from Ross and Jake. With the opposition being demoralised we thought that the game would open up into a more free running game of rugby. This was not the case, credit to the Barbarians they came back at us with everything they had using their big heavy pack in combination with their speedy backs. With excellent tackling in our back line we managed to concede only 2 tries finally winning narrowly 26-24

Tries: Ryan, Ahmet, Ross, Jake
Convs: Cookie x3

Spartans 29 - 7 Chess Valley 3XV - October 29th
Written by Two Soups

Spartans found themselves without a league game again on Sunday, with Bulldogs RFC being the latest opposition forced to pull out at the last minute due to a lack of numbers. Fortunately we found willing replacements in Chess Valley RFC's newly formed 3XV. This was apparently the team's first ever game, although by the look of them, the same couldn't be said for most of their players. Joking aside, hats off to Chess Valley for managing to get a 3XV together, and dragging them all the way down from Rickmansworth. With the relatively recent 59-0 drubbing by HAC still fresh in the memory of many of the Spartans, the squad were keen to get back to winning ways. (click read more for full article)

Spartans 0 v 59 HAC 2XV/3XV - October 8th
Written by Gaydrian

So it was the turn of HAC IIIs to take on the mighty Spartans.

The team was ready for the off, looking in good order with our shiny new kit. The weather was overcast but not cold, and the pitch was in great condition... opposite us Eton were playing Hampton at football - interesting!!

Now you may wonder why I am not talking about the game...well.... it was something of a one sided affair. For the first 7-10 minutes we looked good, our set piece was very solid, the ball retention was ok and we had a good defensive line.

However, after that it wasn’t quite so great. HAC realised that avoiding contact was more than likely going to win them the game and they were right! However the boys stuck at the task in hand and on several occasions looked like nearly going over the white wash, but we just lacked the final killer blow. The opposition were simply too good for us, we eventually went down 59-0 which was a fair reflection of their superiority, but not on the spirit that we ALL showed when waging war against the might of HAC IIs.

A few Spartans stood out for various reason, firstly I would like to mention Waldo a new player for the Club who showed tremendous defensive skills and ran with power and pace when we had the ball...which wasn’t that often. Another back row worthy of a mention was Gavin Lock who has returned to the bosom of the Thamesians/Spartans family after a few seasons in the wilderness. The back three of Crazy Chris, Crazy Sam and Paddy worked hard all afternoon, and weren’t rightly rewarded for their efforts! The pack were strong and the front row in particularly stuck it to’em! Also I would like to mention the outstanding coaching and general verbiage that came from our injured captain Inchy whilst manning the touchline!

All in all a tough day at the office but in the words of King Leonidas of Sparta "Only the hard and strong may call themselves Spartans. Only the hard. Only the strong." And we were hard and strong!

Feltham 3rd XV 7 v 42 Spartans - October 1st
Written by Jeffs
Monday, 03 October 2011 14:15

Heading towards Feltham on Saturday in 30C temperatures and less than 15 players you would have forgiven me for feeling a little apprehensive before the games kick off especially as we were unable to practise before the game and it was pretty much a brand new outfit from last week’s win against London French.

Even with the agreed uncontended scum I thought we were going to have our work cut out but thankfully, the team pretty much started where we left off the week before although in fairness, our defence seemed much tighter largely due to an exceptional performance from the back row forwards and some excellent last ditch tackles from Nigel aka James Lawson at N0.15.

After a frantic opening 20 minutes the game settled down when our No.9 Sam and No.10 Jones began to dictate the pace of game. It wasn’t long afterwards that Feltham trapped on their line threw away a loose pass which was picked up by our outside centre (Whose name I will leave out for the minute) to stroll in for our first try. Within the final 10 minutes of the 1st half we managed to score one more again going in under the posts. This was scored by Sam putting us 14-0 up and ready for a tough 2nd half.

As the 2nd half kicked off we were all too aware that we needed to score first and with the flankers tied down in the uncontended scrums Sam picked the ball up at scrum-half and ran 30 meters to give us that third vital try touching down in the corner. This was neatly converted by Jones who didn’t miss a single kick the whole afternoon. The Spartans now on a roll stepped their game up even further and managed to run in another 3 tries all of which were converted giving us a score of 42-0. James Lawson scored our final try that day when he ran in to score from his own 22 (although he needed an oxygen mask afterwards).

In the final quarter, Feltham brought on a number of subs who had an instant impact to the game and if it was not for some excellent tackling from the whole team, Feltham would off scored a number of tries but fortunately we managed to keep this down to just one giving us a final result of 42-7.

One player who was my man of the match was Alex Pitiot who had a storming game at open-side and seemed to be at ever breakdown and ruck making a complete nuisance of himself and winning vital ball for the team.

Finally I would just like to congratulate the whole team for this performance at the weekend and long may it continue.

Tries: Jeffs x3, Sam x2, James Lawson
Conv: Jones x6

Spartans 22 v 17 London French II - September 24
Written by Kourosh
Monday, 26 September 2011 09:01

The Spartans first Merit Table match went exceptionally well, especially as it was the first time the team have played together, and not knowing each other made the event more challenging for everyone. However, this meant nothing to Mr Jeffs. He just wanted to win and turned the game into a bit of a 'James Jeffs Show'. He usually took matters into his own hands and even though he was playing full back he was mostly lined up wherever the ball was going, ready to take the ball and run. Unfortunately his act of selfishness put the Spartans behind as he forgot his defensive responsibilities in favour of the hunt for glory. He, however, was having none of it and tried even harder, going out of position even more until he scored. Jeffs managed to score a hat-trick of tries, nearly being stopped by the opposition every time, but managing to just hang on to cross the line. Even though he could have passed the ball in those tight situations for an easier try by one of the many Spartans in support, he didn't (How selfish...) As the game went on, the rest of the team got to know each other a bit more and now were playing a lot better. The pack worked exceptionally well together, hitting those rucks and winning the ball for the backs. Even Inchy made an effort on the day and tried to help out a bit... All this great forwards work then allowed the mighty Foxy (from Old Hamptonians) to cross the line and get on the score board.

Near the end of the second half, Spartans had to face a rather tragic mistake made by the referee (writers opinion). This resulted in an ending which no one expected...Yes, two of the great Spartan forwards got a yellow cards and were sent off (Kourosh and Johny Farrell, tut tut). Kourosh got penalized for tackling after the whistle blew, but later on he tried to convince everyone that the reason that ref stopped the game wasn't because of his late tackle, it was because Chris was 10m offside and it was he the ref meant to penalise (and knowing Chris exuberance to get to the ball, this can be believed).

All in all this was a great performance from the Spartans and lead to their first victory (22-17), which will be marked in history, as the first of many!
