Ready for the 2010/11 Season Print E-mail

All Rugby Lovers,

Well, it seems like no time between seasons these days. Plans are already underway for Thamesians 2010/11 season; both on and off the field.

Believe it or not mid week, and weekend, training is already underway for those who like to keep their fitness up during the summer. Both are taking place down at Marble Hill Park, near the car park; 7.30pm on Thursdays and 10.30am on Saturdays (weather permitting).

The seasons competitive fixture list is already up on the website (click here) along with a couple of friendlies that have already been organised. The first fixture of the season is a friendly against Bicester Rugby Club on the 4th September down at Marble Hill; with an early kick-off of 11.00am as our visitors are then going on to the Premiership opening double header at Twickenham. Our first competitive fixture is on the 25th of September Away against Watford.

A season ending tour is already been rumoured so hang onto your seats for a ripper of a season on the playing front!

Off the playing field there is also work underway to organise the social calendar for the coming season. A dinner/dance is planned for the 2nd of October (details to follow). The season ending hog roast was certainly a favourite so we will look to bring that back for a couple of occasions during the season……I can here the licking of lips from here! We will also have our usual French visitors from ASDE club during the 6 Nations period in February 2011. If anyone wants to help with any social organising they should contact Sandra Redmond.

As always, we are looking to recruit as many players as possible. If you know anyone interested then bring them down to an off season get together, or if closer to the season, a few beers, and a Thamesian experience, at the Clubhouse! Or alternative link them up with Captain Adrian and we can take it from there. Guys of all shapes and sizes are welcome – as you can see in our current playing membership!

Have a great summer and see you on the field!

Ed

Thamesians 1XV 15 Hatfield 0 - October 24th Print E-mail

Thamesians 1XV manage to keep a clean sheet and beat Hatfield by 15 points.

However the score could have been even higher if it hadn't been for the hands or rather the lack of them from Zippy. After some strong play from the forwards and a Lightning break from Matty Yates, Yates managed to draw two (some would argue three) men, and putting his body on the line he delayed the pass right up to the moment of impact, he popped the ball out to a unmarked Zippy. With such a perfect pass, Yates could only asume a certain try would result as he was knocked off his feet and driven backwards. However along with the thud of himself hitting the floor he also heard the squeals of Zippy, as with only 15m to go and a clear field ahead, Zippy watched the ball bounce right out of the bread basket and forward onto the floor. Reading previous match reports written by the man himself you can only wonder how the mighty have fallen?

Although there was some great performances around the pitch, Kingston Keiths defence and cover on the wing, the tireless foraging of Lance and Nicks backrow play, along with the now expected disruptive play of Marlon to name a few, Thamesians did at times look like a team slightly lost. So with another good win under their belt, strides now have to be made to pull the team together and get it working as a unit if they are rise to the top of the league.

Thamesians 2XV 14 Hammersmith & Fulham 33 - October 17th Print E-mail

Saturday proved to be a tough game for Thamesians against a younger and fitter Hammersmith side, although the result in no way represents the battle that took place on the pitch.

With uncontested scrums and not one fat bloke in sight on a young and fresh looking opposition, a Thamesians Winger missing in action (Young Alex), and a confused looking Baldy moved from pack to Wing to fill a gap, it was clear that this game was going to be anything but a walk in the park.

Down to 14 men Thamesians still managed to be dominant in the first half, with a try from Lance and conversion from Cookie.  Then defending well with everyman putting body on the line to keep a persistent Hammersmith out of the 22.  Strong runs and great passing from Billy created the few opportunities that T’s were unable to cash in on due to an equally determined opposition.

Yates, Gav, Brendan, Si and Baldy to name a few held a strong defensive line in the second half, with Zippy tackling anything that moved.  Finally a second opportunity came as Grant released Zippy, who broke the defensive line and ran in T’s second try of the game.

Victory celebrations were short lived, as it wasn’t long before a more determined Hammersmith side with a fresh batch of subs started to make an impact.   Injuries to Brendan and Yates, meant that Slash with was pulled off the sideline despite injury to join a tired team of 13 men.   Hammersmith cashed in on their opportunity winning the game with a succession of running tries.
