It’s that time of the year that we’ve all been waiting for…the return of the rugby season and our retaking of the Clubhouse! The committee have been hard at work over the summer months to help the club progress to the next level both on and off field and here’s where I had you over to our newly elected Chairman, JD:
“The new season cannot commence without first saying a massive thank you to departing Chairman, Bart Redmond (pictured). Bart joined the committee in 2003 initially as membership secretary and then combining this role with that of Treasurer, before becoming the Club Chairman. His fifteen year continuous stint on the committee is I am fairly certain a record that will not be broken, and is a testimony to his total commitment to the club. Of course his history with Thamesians goes back many years before this- he first put his boots on for the club just as Margaret Thatcher came to power. At the time you could still get change from a pound for two pints! (if you drank mild). Bart leaves the club in rude health and I am delighted to say that he is still providing guidance behind the scenes as Club President – a role he takes over from another club stalwart - his wife Sandra!
Looking ahead to the new season the club will be putting out four teams – Mens 1st and 2nd XVs, a Womens XV, and a Vets XV. The playing side has made massive strides lead by Billy Edmonds, our Head Coach, and Lance Davies, our Club Captain. Maintaining this progress will be the main focus.
We have also recognised that the facilities need to keep place with the improvements with the playing side, and the first phase of works to upgrade the exterior of the pavilion is now finished. The works to the interior are also progressing and the end of September will mark a significant milestone when the bar area decoration and fit-out should be completed.
There will be a number of social events in the pavilion so please come along and enjoy the improved environment. Already planned is a Golden Oldies day on 15th December, and our social secretary is busy compiling details of other events that will appear on the website and be notified by Newsletter.
The other key change will be the move back to playing at our spiritual home, Waldegrave School (formally Thames Valley Grammar School). Final discussions are taking place with the aim to achieve this as early as our October fixtures. Hopefully this will stir a few memories!
Whether watching the team at Marble Hill or Waldegrave, or simply enjoying a pint in the pavilion, we look forward to your support in what is set to be another successful year.”
