The Spartans headed to Ickenham & Uxbridge on Saturday tracing maintain their unbeaten start to the season. But if we were going to pull this off it was going to be with the help of a few last minute call ups. The makeshift lineup got off to a slow start. Kicking into a gale, Ts just couldn’t seem to get out of own 22 in the first 20 mins. This pressure told with 3 short range tries. Eventually we were able to string together enough phases to get the ball wide to our pacey back 3, who duely ran in a 70m score under the posts with Ben (TW). Confidence flowing, we were back on the front foot and were able to cap this off with fullback Michael.
After the break, both teams swapped scores, with Ben capitalising on some loose ball to run in another from long range. Ts down 9 points going into the final 25 mins before breaking out of a defensive set in our own 22 to go the length of the field. Lightning struck twice with a kick through and tackle off the ball resulting in a penalty try. 5 point lead Ts.
Cue a tense final 10 valiantly withstanding waves of attack on our own line, the oppo’s MoM (whistle in hand) doing everything in his power to ensure a grandstand finish. With the clock well into the red, the maroon dam finally broke and they dotted down in the corner with a difficult conversation to come. As the oppo kicker got into his stance the rugby gods sent down some cosmic karma in the form of a gust of wind that blew the kick wide.
FT 31-31
Unbeaten record maintained.
