Staines Women 5 v 39 Thamesians Women

A dominant opening-day victory to kick off the new season

Following the RFU’s decision to delay the season by two weeks, the Thamesians Women were raring to run out for their first game of the season—and they delivered a statement performance on the road, securing a comprehensive 39-5 win against Staines Women.

From the opening whistle, Thamesians set a relentless tempo. This milestone fixture marked Sophie Johnson’s debut game and her first outing as captain, alongside Alix Reeves stepping out for her first match as vice-captain. Together, they led a fierce, cohesive display that immediately put Staines on the back foot.

The forward pack laid a magnificent platform, dominating the physical battles in the contact area. Leading the charge up front was Amber Attack, named Forward of the Match after battling through tackles, making those hard yards, and getting herself over the line for crucial tries. Her relentless work rate provided quick, clean possession that allowed the backline to orchestrate the attack with confidence.

Out wide, the backs played with exceptional pace and precision. Aoibhin O’Connor earned Back of the Match honours, showing everyone what the backs are made of with speed, skill, and a performance that made an impact from start to finish.

The day also featured unforgettable club milestones. Harpreet Lagha (newly minted wife of the men's 1XV captain) crowned her debut appearance with a fantastic brace, crossing the whitewash for two brilliant tries. Meanwhile, Lois Harvey marked a massive personal milestone by playing her very first game of rugby ever, having joined the squad last season and throwing herself straight into the action with incredible grit.

Staines fought bravely throughout, showing real determination to stay in the contest whenever they had the ball. However, the sheer pressure and structured phase-play from Thamesians proved difficult to contain. Every time the hosts looked to build momentum, Thamesians' defensive line snapped shut, turning defence into attack with sharp support play.

As the game wore on, the visiting side's superior fitness and sustained pressure told. The tries continued to flow as Thamesians exploited space across the park, converting their territorial dominance into a commanding scoreboard lead. Despite a spirited second-half effort from Staines, Thamesians maintained absolute control of the match until the final whistle.

A final score of 39-5 marks a brilliant start to the campaign, reflecting a fantastic all-round team performance, superb debut impacts, and a very well-deserved opening-day victory for Thamesians Women.
